Full Scale Exercise EMDM

EMDM students were recently involved in a full scale exercise on Wednesday, June 6th, 2018, in Bellinzago Novarese. The scenario saw a ship wreck with around 120 migrants fleeing a conflict. The simulation included a Role 2 Enhanced Military Field Hospital set up by the Italian Army just for this comprehensive exercise.

The main purpose of this exercise was to teach students that crisis situations require more than just medical attention as a response. Social media and press coverage, military preparedness and input, political aid, and civilian assistance are also important, key factors. The main objectives of this successful simulation exercise within the EMDM were twofold: firstly, it was intended to train the EMDM students in disaster and humanitarian response, providing them the opportunity to implement the invaluable skills acquired during the educational program (eLearning phase and residential course).  Secondly, it was intended to provide the students with an understanding of how to conduct a performance analysis related to a medical response featuring both disaster and humanitarian settings.

The full scale exercise was extremely successful thanks to the collaboration of the Italian Army, which arranged a fully-equipped field hospital, and the support of the Disaster Medicine Service of the Piedmont Region, Italian Civil Protection, Italian Red Cross, Croce di Sant’Andrea, Croce Bianaca di Novara and local authorities. Without their invaluable help, this full scale exercise would have not been possible and could not have made such an impact on everyone involved.

Pictures of the full scale exercise are now available in our photogallery .
