Last week, EMDM students took part in a full scale exercise which involved more than 350 people, in Bellinzago Novarese (Novara, Italy). The scenario saw a theater partially collapsed during a party in a youth center. As the crowd panicked, people ran for the two emergency exits, one of which led to a courtyard car parking. The force of the fleeing crowd made a railing collapse and dozens of people fell, crushing some of those below to death. A pile of abandoned shoes on the scene testifies the chaos of the stampede, with survivors and the bereaved weeping outside the youth club as emergency vehicles started to arrive. Injured people were brought to a Role 2 Enhanced Military Field Hospital set up by the Italian Army just for this comprehensive exercise.
The full scale exercise was extremely successful thanks to the collaboration of the Italian Army, the Novara Provincial Civil Protection, the Italian Red Cross, Croce di Sant’Andrea, Croce Bianca di Milano and the local authorities. Without their invaluable help this full scale exercise would have not been possible and could not have made such an impact on all the actors involved.
Pictures of the full scale exercise are now available in CRIMEDIM photo gallery. Click on the image below to watch the video of EMDM simulation.
