In April 2026, CRIMEDIM launched REACT – Resilience Enhancement of Migrants through Active Community Participation and peer-Training, a research project funded by Fondazione Cariplo (112,200€) and running until September 2027.
REACT addresses the reality that climate-induced disasters, such as floods and heatwaves, do not affect everyone equally. Migrants often face social, economic, and language barriers that limit access to information, support, and emergency services. The project aims to empower migrants in Milan to become active agents of resilience: understanding risks, co-creating practical strategies for preparedness, and sharing knowledge within their own communities.
The project unfolds in four key phases, following a Community-Based Participatory Research approach that actively involves migrants in every step, from identifying risks to co-creating strategies and sharing knowledge within their communities.
Mapping and trust-building – identifying migrant communities through local organizations and fostering relationships based on trust.
Exploring perceptions – interviewing participants to understand how they perceive risks, what strategies they currently use, and the obstacles they face.
Co-creating a toolkit – together with participants, developing practical tools for disaster preparedness, including safety strategies, city maps with safe locations, and user-friendly guides tailored to cultural and linguistic needs.
Peer-delivery and evaluation – participants act as peer trainers, sharing the toolkit with their communities, while the project evaluates the effectiveness and impact of these activities.
By placing migrants at the center of the process, REACT not only produces practical, culturally sensitive tools but also fosters stronger community networks and collective resilience, giving participants a voice in shaping the ways they prepare for and respond to climate-induced disasters.
